UC employees sue to block Trump attempts to control speech on California campuses

Unions representing thousands of University of California teachers and employees sued the Trump administration on Tuesday for threatening to cut off billions of dollars in federal funds unless UC halts its longtime policies that aid racial, ethnic and sexual minorities.

ā€œThe President’s attempt to require that universities conform to his worldview is un-​American and unconstitutional,ā€ lawyers for the unions declared in a suit filed in federal court in San Francisco. The Constitution’s First Amendment, they said, ā€œprecludes the government from attempting to control academic thought and discourse on university campusesā€ under what they called ā€œthe pretense of addressing antisemitism.ā€
