From City Hall to State Prisons: Workers Bear the Brunt

Welcome to the SF Dispatch, a daily newsletter round-up to save you some time catching up on the latest headlines from billionaire funded to independent news.

SFPD let outside cops cops search city surveillance data for ICE
Out-of-state cops made over 1.6 million illegal searches of San Francisco’s license-plate reader data.

“There’s always been this ‘trust us’ position from law enforcement,” Hofer said. “‘We’re going to hold your data. It’s in our custody. We’re going to protect it.’ But when you see these numbers of violations and them openly flaunting the law, it calls all of that into question.”

“The Police Commission and Mayor Lurie need to codify penalties for anyone sharing San Francisco’s ALPR data with other agencies for immigration enforcement purposes,” Supervisor Jackie Fielder said in a statement, using an acronym for “automated license-plate recognition.”
The six fatal flaws in Mayor Lurie’s so-called ‘Family Zoning Plan’ - 48 hills
It won’t bring down housing prices. It will create displacement—and it’s terribly divisive
While billing itself as a “family housing program” that will expand density along major transit corridors it, in fact, does little to either preserve existing family housing or require the affordability necessary for actual families to live to in the new housing it proposes. It provides no impact fee on developers of the new dense housing to pay for public transit operations—at a time when public transit faces financial collapse.
Prop E task force makes progress in cleaning up San Francisco’s commission problem
The chairwoman of one of the city’s 130 advisory bodies wants to kill her own commission. It’s part of a larger movement looking to clean up City Hall’s ‘detritus.’

"Now, before you leap to any conclusions about Post’s anti-democratic political agenda, there are some things you should know about her. A Stanford MBA and a retired investment banker..."

“It is my opinion, and I say this with affection, that San Francisco has an excess of democracy,” she told me. “Many people feel it’s their right to have a lot of influence in how decision-makers make decisions about the government. At some point, you have to trust your government is doing its job. And if it’s not, then you un-elect them. You throw them out.”
Complaints About California’s Hellishly Hot Prison Cells Have Been Mounting for Years | KQED
After years of complaints from inmates and advocates about hot temperatures inside prison cells, California is finally embarking on a plan to cool some cells. But it’s only a test, and it will only help a fraction of inmates.

“Extreme heat poses a serious health risk to all in CDCR,” said Lily Harvey, senior staff attorney at the Prison Law Office, which represents inmates in several federal class-action court cases covering health care in state prisons. “Air-conditioned housing units are the only effective way to protect against that risk.”

Extreme heat is warping life for all Californians, but state prisoners will be hit especially hard.  Many are housed in inland or desert environments where temperatures are slated to rise more than the statewide average over the next few decades.
