SF Dispatch 9/18/25

Welcome to the SF Dispatch, a daily newsletter round-up to save you some time catching up on the latest headlines from billionaire funded to independent news.

It’s striking how quickly things have unraveled once conservatives took over City Hall. With a new majority on the Board of Supes, along with control over the Mayor’s and District Attorney’s Offices, the School Board and the local Democratic County Central Committee, political power in San Francisco has been consolidated in the hands of politicians funded by and friendly to the interests of the tech and real estate industries.

The Engardio recall and the failure of conservative politics in SF - 48 hills
In the first test of the new ‘moderates’ and their policies, the voters said, ‘no thanks.’

Just as the recall of progressive politicians is consistently deemed a rejection of progressive policies, so too must the recall of this conservative politician be viewed as a rejection of his conservative ideology. Voters are seeing what “moderate” politicians have to offer San Francisco, and just nine months in, are already starting to say, “no thanks.”

A Decade Without Heat: Inside the Valley Street Tenants’ Fight for Dignified Housing
Tenants at 2341 Valley street, a 41-unit building in uptown Oakland, are fighting against squalid conditions, an absent landlord and city bureaucracy. But they’re not giving up.

With the help of their TANC chapter, the tenants set up the meeting at a community space. As the building is majority Spanish language speakers, they hired Spanish language interpreters and brought dinner to share using union funds. They prepared an agenda to discuss managerial changes and expectations beyond move-out negotiation logistics, and hung posters with pictures of their current living conditions on the walls.

New RV permit: How SF’s new rules will limit large vehicles
San Francisco has launched the Large Vehicle Refuge Permit, requiring RV residents to apply by October 24.

The city says the program will “coordinate outreach and support,” but advocates argue it is primarily an enforcement tool that locks eligibility, ties permits to compliance and ultimately requires residents to give up their vehicle homes.

READING GROUP - “Housing the City by the Bay: Tenant Activism, Civil Rights, and Class Politics in San Francisco”
Covering the past century, “Housing the City by the Bay” explores the history and many incarnations of San Francisco’s public housing programs. Meant to alleviate the boom and bust of the Bay Area’s real estate market, public housing programs have had a complicated relationship to working class struggles for community control and preservation of housing. “This history of public housing sheds light on changing attitudes towards liberalism, the welfare state, and the economic and civil rights attached to citizenship.” Join us for the 1st of a 4 part session. We will meet every two weeks on Thursday, starting September 18th, 7:30pm at the the DSASF office on 1916 McAllister Street. Zoom available after RSVP
Democratic Socialists Find An Eager Crowd In Ingleside
DSA-curious San Franciscans filled Ingleside Library’s community room on Tuesday evening to learn more about the organization’s mission.

🌹 “I think a lot of the people who join DSA all have a lot of love for San Francisco,” Matt R. said. “A certain class of people complain about the city a lot, even our last mayor was a bit of an SF hater. This group is invested in transforming the city; it’s a loving act.”

El Tecolote wins national award for community-centered visuals - El Tecolote
El Tecolote received the Insight Award at the 2025 Nonprofit News Awards for visual storytelling.

For more than five decades, El Tecolote has built credibility by telling stories that matter for our immigrant and working-class communities. That legacy has built trust among marginalized groups, allowing me to push the boundaries of visual journalism through a collaborative focus on unseen stories: from handwritten notes collected during the city’s homeless sweeps, to an intimate profile of a day laborer who lost his leg on the job.
