🤐 Comms from city programs are getting worse

Welcome to the SF Dispatch, a daily newsletter round-up to save you some time catching up on the latest headlines from billionaire funded to independent news.

SF Streamlined Its Street Teams. Now, Fewer People Are Getting the Help They Need
Street medicine outreach workers describe a new, expensive, and disorganized program that lacks clear objectives.

Seven current and former members of these neighborhood street teams spoke to me for this story. They all requested anonymity so they could speak candidly without losing their city jobs. In my 10 years reporting on issues of homelessness and public health in San Francisco, this has become an increasingly common request. Official communication about city programs has always been tightly controlled — and it’s getting worse. Press statements are vague. Questions go unanswered. Access to city staff for interviews, particularly those not in high ranks, is limited or impossible.

Strange (and maybe inappropriate) actions at the Planning Commission ... - 48 hills
... plus an attack on preservation in North Beach, and has the privatized zoo improved enough to get another $3 million? That’s The Agenda for Sept. 14 to 21

Tanner started listing examples of blocks, and in some cases specific sites, where property owners were asking for expanded height limits. She mentioned a property on Sutter Street, where the owner wants the right to expand what is now a small single-family home to 65 feet. She said a person who claimed to represent the owners of Park Merced also asked for greater height limits. Again: Strange. A member of the commission staff actually discussed the idea of giving special zoning favors to certain areas and maybe certain property owners.

What We Talk About When We Talk About Alt-Weeklies
Alternative newsweeklies launched careers, called out corruption, and made journalism fun. Can we bring that energy back?

Of course, there was also a society column in the San Francisco Chronicle. But if you wanted to read a first-person scene report about naked dancing on Polk Street, you’d have to pick up the Bay Guardian. A free weekly published from 1966 to 2014, the paper focused on underground art, culture, and the LGBTQ community. It covered local politics with a progressive point of view, published adventurous narrative features, and its writers weren’t afraid to express opinions. In the space of a few pages, you could read a sex column, a profile of a local hip-hop crew, and the latest installment in a three-decade war with PG&E.

How San Francisco became the ultimate ‘996 City’
The city’s “Great Lock In” means grinding for at least 12 hours, six days a week, and making sure everyone knows about it.

“When you say you work 996 in SF, it’s more of a mindset that work is your life rather than a rigid routine to follow,” said Tengtrakool, CEO of Givefront, a financial management platform for nonprofits. Even in the Y-Scraper, Tengtrakool said, almost no one is working 12 hours straight every single day.
