YIMBY rally gets testy ahead of vote on S.F. upzoning plan
Mayor Daniel Lurie was shouted down at first and heckling continued throughout the rally. Up next, the Planning Commission meeting

“Hold on, hold on everybody,” Lurie said. “My question is, can I speak? And then we hear from you? Because this is a country that right now is experiencing division. I would love to have a respectful conversation.” “Oh, for fuck’s sake,” someone in the crowd responded.

S.F. starts strip searching jail inmates after they visit with attorneys
Over the past few weeks, San Francisco sheriff’s deputies have begun routinely strip searching inmates after they meet with their attorneys.

Angela Chan, the city’s assistant chief public defender, said a number of her office’s clients have already turned down legal visits. The practice, she said, would likely have a “disproportionate impact” on women, transgender people and people who have experienced sexual assault.

How ICE Is Using Your Data — and What You Can Do About It | KQED
ICE’s reach may get even wider due to a new partnership with a spyware company. But there have always been tools at the immigration agency’s disposal. KQED speaks to privacy advocates on what people should know about ICE’s access to their personal data.

California has more robust legal protections around this technology than other states. Police officers in the state are prohibited from pairing footage from their body cameras with facial recognition technology, and cities like San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley have also banned the use of facial recognition technology by city agencies. San Francisco’s police department has nonetheless attempted to circumvent the ban, according to an investigation by The Washington Post.

At S.F. immigration court, mother of 8-month-old narrowly avoids detention
When a DHS attorney tried to dismiss the woman’s asylum case, her husband and eight-month-old daughter were just outside the courtroom doors.

The Guatemalan woman had a baby that she was still breastfeeding, the lawyer told the officer. Is there an alternative to arrest and detention that we can come up with? she asked. The ICE officer looked at the Mission Local reporter and at volunteer court observers also standing in the hallway and asked to speak with the lawyer privately, around the corner in the elevator bank. The two began to walk down the hallway towards the elevator. The remaining ICE officers, all men, told Mission Local not to follow. Go back inside the courtroom, they said. Don’t “loiter” in the hallway.
